  • Containers – Part 2 An Introduction to Kubernetes

Containers – Part 2 An Introduction to Kubernetes

Back by popular demand once again, our very own Warren Hodgkinson will deliver part 2 in our series of IT Lectures on Containerisation.

The first session focused on the basics with an install of Docker and some nice examples of the ‘use and throwaway’ approach to IT tools and services. In this workshop, we progress to a basic understanding of Kubernetes – the why and the how. This event will be both theorical and hands-on, requiring a PC with Docker, Kubectl and Kind installed on it.

We’ll look at the benefits of using Kubernetes both in the cloud, and on one’s local computer, and progress through some hands-on examples to illustrate various concepts such as declarative specifications, persistent storage and high availability. These concepts include some keystone principles that are criticial in getting the most out of cloud infrastructure. If we have time, we hope the last part of the workshop will include a fairly advanced walk through demo of zero-downtime application upgrades.

Limited spots are available, so don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to learn new stuff and meet other IT people locally. Please RSVP below to secure your place!

    Notes

    • Everyone is welcome, though places are limited, please RSVP
    • This is a free event.
    • If you want to take part in the workshop, please bring a laptop and install Docker, Kubectl and Kind beforehand.

  • Containers – Part 1 An Introduction to Docker

Containers – Part 1 An Introduction to Docker

Back by popular demand, our very own Warren Hodgkinson will give an introduction to Docker and Containers followed by a short workshop to get people up and running.

Docker is a powerful open-source tool that simplifies how software applications are developed, shared, and run. It uses containers to package applications along with everything they need to work, making it easy to move them from one computer to another without worrying about compatibility issues. Docker revolutionizes the way software is built and deployed, enabling faster development and deployment cycles.

Following the introduction, the workshop part is optional, however we promise it will be interesting and engaging. In order to make the most of the workshop time, please install a Docker environment on your laptop. Docker-desktop will be suitable, and can be downloaded from https://docker.com/products/docker-desktop/

This is the first part in a two part series of lectures, the second building on the concept of Containers and will focus on Kubernetes.

Limited spots are available, so don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to learn new stuff and meet other IT people locally. Please RSVP below to secure your place.

    About Mehrdad

As a Leading R&D Researcher in Quantum Computing, Mehrdad Maleki harnesses his deep expertise in computer science and mathematics to propel innovation and drive forward research within the dynamic realm of quantum computing. Boasting a formidable foundation in both of these domains, including a notable postdoctoral research fellowship in computer science at Maynooth University, where he focused on the intricacies of Automatic Differentiation, Mehrdad specializes in the intricate art of algorithm design for Quantum Computing and Quantum Information. His expertise extends to encompass Nonlinear Optimization, Crafting Programming Languages, Compiler-Interpreter Design, Exploring Dynamical Systems, Delving into Classical Mechanics, Mastering Control Theory, and Navigating the complexities of Differential Geometry. What sets Mehrdad apart is his exceptional ability to discern the intricate connections that thread through mathematics, computer science, physics, and logic. This unique talent empowers him to construct bridges between these diverse disciplines and, in doing so, propel the boundaries of what is achievable in these fields.

    About Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is a cutting-edge technology that harnesses the principles of quantum mechanics to perform complex calculations at speeds unimaginable with classical computers. Unlike traditional bits that can be either 0 or 1, quantum bits or qubits can exist in multiple states simultaneously, thanks to superposition. This property allows quantum computers to explore multiple solutions in parallel, making them exceptionally powerful for tasks such as factoring large numbers, simulating quantum systems, and optimizing complex problems. While still in the early stages of development, quantum computing holds the promise of revolutionizing industries like cryptography, materials science, and artificial intelligence by tackling problems that were once thought to be insurmountable for classical computers.

  • Protecting our children online

    Protecting our children online

Presented by CoderDojo Mullingar and MIT Mullingar in cooperation with Youth Work Ireland Midlands and An Garda Síochána.

The talk will focus on how as parents we need to take proactive steps in safeguarding our children from unsuitable content, behavious and persons online.

Nearly all Irish children and young people now have access to the internet, in many different modes. The internet provides young people access to a wealth of valuable information and limitless sources of entertainment. Nevertheless, it also can expose young people to certain dangers and risks.

Parents and guardians have a large role to play in accessing potential dangers online and should be actively educating their children on these risks. Parents/guardians need to understand and investigate their children’s internet use. Parents/guardians do not need to know about every application, social media platform, trend or game there is, however, they do need to know about their child’s interests and what they like to do online.

    This talk will cover important issues such as;

    • Online bullying
    • Communicating and creating discussion about online activities with young people
    • Setting rules and guidelines for internet use.
    • Security and passwords (sharing information)
    • Trends and activities
    • Gaming, social media and mobile phone activities

This is an interactive presentation, which creates a safe space for discussions and questions throughout.
